DescriptionThis edition of The Poetical Works of Edgar Allan Poe was first published in 1853 (London: Addey and Co., 1853) and republished in 1856. It contained twenty illustrations, including a portrait of Poe designed by Edward Henry Wehmert, James Godwin, Frederick William Hulme, and Harrison Weir. George Dalziel and his brother Edward Dalziel were in charge of the wood engravings. This set of illustrations was expanded in 1859 (The Poetical Works of Edgar Allan Poe, London: Addey and Co., 1859) with eight new designs by Henry Anelay engraved on wood by George Samuel Measom; the illustration now designed by Anelay for «The Raven» replaced the one that Wehmert had designed in 1853 for the same poem and that served as a frontispiece. All of these illustrations, twenty-seven in all, are reprinted here.
It includes the preface «Life and Genius of Edgar Allan Poe» by James Hannay, who dedicates the volume to Dante Gabriel Rosseti «with the highest admiration and with brotherly regard», and forty-three poems by Poe.
Hardcover binding in green cloth with title and engraved gilt ornaments (raven on bust of Pallas).
The same illustrations also appear in the London: J. & C. Brown & Co., 1864 reprint.
