DescriptionVolume of the series of "Readable Books" by Henry Vizetelly. It includes "Memoir of the Author", eight tales and eleven poems, as well as twenty-five illustrations -counting the vignette on the title page and the portrait of Poe (not twenty-six woodcuts as advertised on the title page). The illustrations, anonymous woodcuts, are of fairly good quality and variety and deserve the honor of being the first extensive visual reading of a selection of Poe's tales and poems. The only non-illustrated tale included is "The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar."
Extra-illustrated copy that includes a portrait of Poe engraved by Frederick Halpin (steel engraving) in unknown date [c. 1870], but it first appeared in The Works of Edgar Allan Poe (New York: W. J. Widdleton, 1876).
Hardbound book with half leather binding (spine and corners).
